It’s quite the opposite of a happy ending. These things do happen.

Bioware fans called for a redo on the Mass Effect 3 endings, and they got their wish. Ryan has been deeply invested in this, and he tells me that the new ending still does not address his concerns. Mainly those regarding the fate of his beloved Miranda, aka Yvonne Strahovski.

Generally though, if someone isn’t with you, they’re not with you. It’s pretty simple logic.

When Tycho over at Penny Arcade finished up the third episode of On The Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness as a short story, I felt almost entirely let down. He is certainly a talented writer, but something seemed to be missing from the equation. It was not necessarily the missing pictures or interactivity, but the lack of whimsy. The stories were so direct and to the point they felt as though they didn’t belong in a series with two games that were designed to make as little sense as possible.

Where were the Mimes and Hobos? What about the horde of Fruit Fuckers? What happened to my house? At least two of these issues have been resolved with the release of the game version of that episode.

Not only did they bring back the various vagrants, but they brought my childhood back in the process. As an SNES styled RPG, On The Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 3 excels. The drudgery of grinding and item collecting has been removed. You can still customize and upgrade your characters, but this doesn’t take a ton of effort. The combat system is sufficiently more complicated than a traditional RPG that you don’t need that drudgery to make the game difficult.

I do miss the comic-like feel of the first two Rain-slick games. There was something very special about being in a game that was a Penny Arcade strip. I absolutely love old school RPGs, but it is not the same. In fact it is entirely different. They took the Penny Arcade characters and molded them into 16 bit sprite formats. This isn’t a bad thing, to be sure, but I can’t help longing for the old ways. The other old ways.
